Arcare Carnegie resident, Alice Ashdown recently celebrated her milestone 104th birthday surrounded by friends, family, fellow residents, and her dedicated support team at Arcare.
Complete with a vanilla sponge cake, high tea, and a tiara, the Arcare Carnegie community came together to celebrate this momentous occasion with centenarian Alice. “She always has a smile on her face and is full of laughter. We couldn’t miss this opportunity to celebrate Alice” Lifestyle Coordinator, Lou Stooke said.
Alice’s secret to life is that she always “looks on the bright side” and keeps a positive mindset. She also said that “spending time with her family and friends” is a key part to living a healthy life and socialising on a regular basis helps maintain relationships.
Born 28 August 1918 in Australia, Alice was one of eleven children in her family and was raised by her older siblings. In 1942, Alice married her beloved husband, William, where they shared many memories and started their own family. “He was a good man and I cooked dinner for him every night. We would always have a beer together before dinner and shared what had happened during our day.”
A mother to Warren and Neville, a grandmother to five and a great-grandmother to five, Alice is living a very fulfilling life. Alice now says that her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are something that she is “most proud of”. “My family and friends are very important to me.” Alice said.
Alice’s sister, Iris, also resides at Arcare Carnegie and celebrated the big day with Alice and her family. The sister duo are best friends and do everything together. The two ladies come together over a cappuccino in the mornings, sitting outside in the community’s newly renovated courtyard; the two can spend the days laughing and reminiscing to their hearts content.
Team members said you could hear them ‘laughing like a couple of young schoolgirls’ from a mile away.
