Bringing the Royal Show to Seniors

on Monday, September 26, 2022

Residents at Mercy Place Edgewater are set to have their very own ‘Royal Show’ experience next week - without even having to leave the popular not-for-profit home in Perth’s northern suburbs.

That’s because the lifestyle and care team at the home has arranged for a host of farm animals to visit residents, and as well as rabbits, ducklings, guinea pigs, piglets and sheep there will be a very special inclusion of a miniature pony.

Mercy Place Edgewater Service Manager, Pammy Singh, says the home’s staff has been preparing for the ‘country visit’ for over a month.

“Everyone is incredibly excited about the animals visiting,” she says.

“Many of our residents won’t be able to go along to this year’s actual Royal Show, but the fact that they have their own version of the traditional annual event to look forward to is a real bonus for them.

“Research has shown how therapeutic animals are, which is why we wanted to bring this scaled-down version of the Royal Show to them; for our team here it’s all about ensuring our residents have enriched lives and can continue to do the things that they have always loved.

“I think the experience will also instigate a trip down memory lane, whereby our seniors will have the opportunity to reminisce about the past and their time spent at The Royal Show in years gone by.”
