Aged Care Residents See Benefits of Recycling

on Thursday, November 3, 2022

Residents from popular western suburbs aged care home, Regis Nedlands, got up close and personal with WA’s recycling operations last week, when they visited Shenton Park’s Containers for Change depot.

The group of octogenarians and nonagenarians saw first-hand what happens to the containers, bottles and cans that end up at the depot, and how they gain a second life by being repurposed into new products and materials.

Several of the residents chose to donate their collected containers to charity, while others enjoyed receiving a small cash windfall of $20 for their bundle of glass and plastic bottles, along with aluminium cans.

88-year-old Marie Thomas was one of the residents involved with the trip, and said the excursion made her realise why recycling was so important.

“It was an incredibly interesting visit and now I realise why recycling is so crucial,” she said.

“It was a very educational day out and I think we all realised what a great initiative Containers for Change is, not only because it means that so much of what we use can be recycled, but also because charities can also benefit.”

Regis Nedlands General Manager, Sam Waldron, said that the aged care home was dedicated to supporting residents to continue to live interesting, rich and fulfilled lives where they continued to gain new experiences and learn new things.

“Regis Nedlands fully supports these type of educational outings as we are focused on enriching the lives of those who chose to live with us and supporting older people to participate in interesting and enjoyable pursuits where they can learn and experience new things,” he said.

“These outings are also a social outlet for our residents and help to cement new friendships, all of which is connected to the emotional wellbeing of seniors, something that we are also very focused on.”
