Music in the Air This Christmas at Mercy Place Mont Clare

on Thursday, November 24, 2022

Dulcet tones and sweet serenading will soon be heard at Mercy Place Mont Clare as residents are treated to a Christmas choir performance by senior singers. The dulcet tones that emanate from the group of seven performers – the Waratah Community Singers who are named after an Avenue in Dalkeith, Perth where they rehearsed regularly in their formative days – will include traditional Christmas carols as well as some more contemporary songs.

As well as accomplished singers, the choir also includes a pianist and violinist, as well as members playing the ukulele, guitar and percussion instruments.

Catherine Plowman, Co-ordinator of the Waratah Community singers, says the pre-Christmas performance, which will take place on Wednesday 21 December, will strongly encourage resident participation.

“We consider it a privilege to share our love of music with others, including the Mont Clare community,” says Ms Plowman. “It uplifts us to hear the audience reminisce and sing along to some of their favourite carols.”

Mercy Place Mont Clare General Manager, Dorothy Wijangco, said the therapeutic effect of music for seniors, particularly those living with dementia and other related conditions, couldn’t be overstated.

“Generally speaking, music is an incredible trigger for emotions and memories from our past to emerge, and we are very thankful to the Waratah Community singers for volunteering their time and performing for our residents just prior to Christmas,” he said.

“The performance is sure to get them into the festive spirit and we are very grateful to the ladies for assisting our residents to continue to enjoy music and the pre-Christmas period.”
