The Australian Government is delivering on its promise to make aged care more transparent and accountable by introducing Star Ratings for residential aged care homes. Preliminary Star Ratings show many aged care homes meet or exceed expectations – with 31 percent receiving 4 or 5 stars.
However, Star Ratings also show that 10 per cent of services have fallen short and received just 1 or 2 stars.
Star Ratings were a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and will enhance transparency and accessibility for Australians.
Residential aged care homes receive an overall Star Rating and ratings against four sub-categories: Compliance, Residents’ Experience, Staffing and Quality Measures.
Minister for Aged Care Anika Wells said, “The delivery of Star Ratings is a significant milestone on the path to a transparent and accountable residential aged care sector.
“Star Ratings provide a nationally consistent benchmark to monitor, compare and improve residential aged care services.
“Star Ratings provide Australians greater and more accessible choices regarding residential aged care.
“To achieve our shared goal of reforming aged care, providers need to embrace transparency and accountability, and not make excuses.
“We have issued providers a preview of their Star Rating which allows them time to prepare for their public release by talking to staff and residents, communicating with families, or developing an improvement plan.
“Star Ratings allow residential aged care providers the opportunity for continuous, measurable improvement.
“My department and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission will continue to work with providers that have services with low ratings.”
Star Ratings will be published on My Aged Care in December.
