Staff and seniors united at Mercy Place Cairns (Bethlehem) to celebrate the diamond and platinum jubilarians of local nuns from the Sisters of Mercy, Sr. Bridget, Sr. Carmel and Sr. Brigid, to acknowledge the many years of service the trio have devoted to the people of Far North Queensland.
Centred around a celebratory morning tea at the popular Cairns aged care home, and including guests from the adjacent Coral Sea Gardens retirement villas and Bareki Apartments, as well as other Sisters of Mercy, the morning offered the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of the diamond and platinum jubilarians to residents and staff at Mercy Health.
“Here at Mercy Place Cairns (Bethlehem), we are very aware of the many people who have been supported and the lives that have been enriched throughout the years as a result of the devoted service of these incredible nuns,” said Mercy Place Cairns (Bethlehem) General Manager Precinct, Zubair Coovadia.
“The support you have given through life’s ups and downs, the mercy you have shown, the joy you have bought and the faith you have imparted to so many has made an incalculable difference to people’s lives.
“What’s more, you have all shown strong witness to the importance of respecting, caring and supporting those in the communities in which you have been part, and have provided so many individuals with the skills to live positive and meaningful lives.”
During the celebration, residents and staff were able to express their gratitude for the Sisters of Mercy who regularly offer social and emotional support, companionship and pastoral care to both residents and families at the aged care home.
Catherine McAuley was born in Dublin, Ireland, and founded the Sisters of Mercy. A woman of deep faith, Catherine spent her entire inheritance building a home to educate children and care for women in need. Her “House of Mercy” still endures today, as does the ministry of the Sisters.
