Resident entertainer, Mrs Gillian ‘Gill’ Churchill, has taken the musical reins at Resthaven Marion—ukulele in hand! Mrs Churchill has performed throughout New South Wales with her ukulele group, entertaining older people living in care. She has also sung with a barbershop chorus and is a keen poet—a person of many talents!
She explains, "Now, I enjoy singing and playing my ukulele amongst a group of fellow residents who also enjoy music."
What started out as a casual get-together, has since become a regular gig on the social calendar, with Mrs Pauline Pattison becoming a regular attendee—oftentimes joining Mrs Churchill in song.
Recently, a talented and accomplished musician, Karen, joined the team as a volunteer, and has fit in seamlessly with this lively musical group, playing her beautiful antique concertina (pictured).
Karen is no stranger to performing, having been a musician with the Royal Australian Air Force, and currently performing with numerous choir groups, both in Australia and internationally.
Karen says, "It is great to share our love of music with residents and experience the joy this brings to the group, as well as myself."
There are many ways for volunteers to connect with older people. Resthaven would like to hear about your interests and discover how you might like to be involved.
