Aged Care Knitting Group Donate Knitted Blankets to Wildlife Shelter

on Monday, March 27, 2023

Earlier this month, Lifeview Emerald Glades knitting group visited Locky's Legacy, a dedicated wildlife sanctuary and wildlife shelter located in Pakenham Upper. The group was proud to donate knitted blankets, which had taken them 12 months to knit and filled four boxes, which were very much appreciated by the shelter. In return, the residents of Emerald Glades were able to see where their hard work was going and how it was helping the animals at Locky's Legacy.

The blankets will assist to care for sick and injured wildlife. Residents were also treated to a cuddle of some of the wildlife.

"It was such a lovely outing and so rewarding to see where the results of all that hard work went," said Eileen Banyard, resident at Lifeview.

Locky's Legacy was thrilled to see a social media post from Lifeview about the visit. The shelter loved the post so much that they reposted it on their own social media accounts, spreading awareness about the knitting group's donation and the importance of supporting local wildlife shelters. This collaboration between the two organisations showcases the power of community and how small acts of kindness can make a big impact.

Marc Zywaczewski, Social Support Coordinator at Lifeview Emerald Glades, explains: "No matter who you are or how old you are, having a purpose makes your work more meaningful, leaving you fulfilled and feeling valued. Our knitting group is a great example of our residents experiencing such value. Not only does the experience help maintain a connection between our residents and the community but by providing a meaningful activity, we are effectively helping enhance moments of satisfaction, happiness and friendship whilst reducing stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Working on a project for 12 months, just makes that moment at the end of donating all those wonderful blankets, even more rewarding. That moment feels a little like Christmas Day."

The knitting group's donation is a great example of the importance of meaningful work for older people. Engaging in activities like knitting, sewing and other crafts can provide a sense of purpose, fulfilment, and social connection for seniors. It's also an opportunity for them to give back to the community and make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Lifeview believe that every person, regardless of age, deserves to live a purposeful and meaningful life, endlessly proud of the residents at Emerald Glades for their generosity and dedication to giving back to the community.

For anyone interested in donating to Locky's Legacy, the shelter accepts donations in the form of old sheets, towels, and blankets. They also welcome donations of pouches or possum boxes for their animals. Please note that Locky's Legacy does not accept monetary donations. To donate, please call 0431 635 858.
