Resthaven Craigmore is fortunate to have a creative volunteer, Julie Sieben, who is on a mission to spread colour and creativity with residents. However, this isn’t what led Julie to begin volunteering at Resthaven four years ago.
Julie explains, "It was time to start considering aged care for Mum, but I didn’t know one thing about aged care, let alone which place would be a suitable fit."
"It was important for me to find the right place for her, and I always wanted to take on volunteering in retirement, so I reached out to our local aged care home, Resthaven Craigmore, and I’m glad I did."
Soon, a single room became available for Julie’s mum.
"I’m thankful I could experience the environment before making that difficult choice, and now, Mum can see me a lot more, and join in on my activities. It gives her a comfort to know I am around."
Julie has found much more than a new home for her Mum.
"While aged care has its challenges, it has been special to grow strong connections with residents who live here, and they continue to inspire me to bring out my creative side."
Since becoming a volunteer, Julie has revitalised the Monday afternoon Knitters’ Group, facilitates bingo on Thursday afternoons, and has sparked a "colourful mission."
"Residents love to see the artwork I share with the group, and they feel inspired to create their own."
Recently, Julie started facilitating a monthly Art & Craft Group in the Main Hall, a space for residents to create and showcase their pieces on the pinboard.
"I have made it my mission to bring more colour and creativity to their environment. Now, we have a pinboard displayed in the Main Hall, where residents can showcase their latest artworks. One day, I hope to create a gallery on-site."
Julie shares why she loves volunteering at Resthaven, "I can see the difference I am making here. It doesn’t matter what we create during our time together, residents always leave feeling that what they are doing is important and recognised."
"If I can inspire residents, and leave them feeling happier in their day, then that is enough for me."
There are many ways for volunteers to connect with older people. If you are interested in supporting the team at Resthaven Craigmore with bocce, bingo, or special events call 8373 9036, or email volunteer@resthaven.asn.au.
