Anzac Day Commemoration of the Fallen at Mayflower

Anzac Day is a significant day in Australian culture, dedicated to paying tribute to the servicemen and women who have fought and died for our freedom. This year, Mayflower Communities honoured this day with formal ceremonies and heartfelt remembrance.

Across Mayflower, the services included reciting the Ode of Remembrance, observing a moment of silence, and hearing the bugle call. Afterwards, everyone came together for morning tea and caught up with friends, which made for a lovely conclusion to the service.

In honour of this special day, Mayflower shared the story of Jack M, a true hero and veteran of the Second World War at the age of 99. Jack served his country with pride in the 5th Scottish Regiment, 39th Infantry Battalion, Fortress Sigs, ANGAU, and 19AAOD during the war, and is one of only two remaining survivors from his regiment. The other survivor is John H, who is a remarkable 101 years old.

During World War II, ANGAU, or the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit, was established as a civilian administration to manage Australian territories in Papua New Guinea. Meanwhile, 19AAOD, or the 19th Australian Army Ordnance Depot, was responsible for providing equipment and supplies to the Australian Army.

The Mayflower Edith Bendall exhibit not only honours Jack M’s service, but also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of Anzac Day in keeping the memory of the fallen alive. Mayflower understand the significance of acknowledging and honouring the past and how it shapes our future.

As all Australians reflect on the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women, and the animals that supported them, the words of the Ode of Remembrance ring true: "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."
