Devoted Husband Finds Purpose in Volunteering and Supporting Dementia Care at Uniting AgeWell

on Monday, May 22, 2023

Stan Roberts' entire world has revolved around his wife, Dorothy, for the past 28 years of their marriage. However, as is often the case for devoted caregivers, he experienced both heartbreak and immense relief when Dorothy's dementia worsened, prompting her move into the Uniting AgeWell Kalkee Community Nangatta in late 2021.

Even now, residing in an independent unit on his own, Stan's world continues to revolve around Dorothy, albeit in her new home. He makes regular visits to her and has taken up volunteering at the facility for two days a week. Stan assists the staff during busy meal times and actively participates in organising activities for the residents. As a pleasant addition, the 80-year-old brings along his beloved saxophone, an instrument he has been playing since his teenage years, and treats everyone to nostalgic tunes.

In observance of National Volunteer Week (May 15-21), it is crucial to express deep gratitude to all the dedicated volunteers, such as Stan, for their tireless efforts and unwavering energy in enhancing the lives of older individuals within our community. This year's theme, "The Change Makers," acknowledges the power of driving change and emphasises the importance of inclusive volunteering that embraces all members of the Australian community.

Andrew Kinnersly, CEO of Uniting AgeWell, affirms that this theme strongly resonates with their organisation, where inclusivity serves as a fundamental value underlying all their endeavors. Recognising and appreciating the significant contribution of volunteer support throughout their extensive history, Uniting AgeWell's services have thrived and expanded.

Stan, a retired computer expert, readily acknowledges that volunteering imbues his days with purpose. "Listening to the residents' stories about their lives is incredibly rewarding," he shares. "Dementia is an immensely cruel disease, and it is an honor to spend time with these individuals, knowing that I can bring some joy to their day and make a difference."

Through his volunteering work, Stan also witnesses firsthand the exceptional care Dorothy receives. "The staff here are incredibly kind and supportive," he affirms. "They go above and beyond to ensure that all the residents are not only doing well, but also genuinely happy."

While Stan dreads the day when Dorothy will no longer recognise him, he finds solace in the fact that his continued volunteering will bring purpose and meaning to his own life, as well as the lives of other older individuals at the facility.
