The importance of having a positive outlet to spend time with other blokes isn’t lost on the care team or male residents at Regis Greenmount, an issue even more pertinent during Men’s Health Week this week.
Indeed, the care team have just launched a model railway club at the popular aged care home, which complements a range of other male-based activities, including a men’s shed and regular ‘blokes-only’ barbecues.
The theme of Men’s Health Week for 2023, which runs from June 12 to 18, is ‘healthy habits’ which focuses on encouraging men to build healthy habits by identifying small changes they can make that benefit their health and wellbeing.
It’s a theme which resonates with the management and care staff at Regis Greenmount, which strives to promote positive health and wellbeing for the male residents living at the aged care home.
Richard Horne, Regis Greenmount General Manager, said Men’s Health Week helped to raise the profile of men’s health and wellbeing, which has often not always been a priority for individual men, and which male residents might not otherwise discuss.
“Men typically keep things close to their chest, so it’s important for them to have time to share their thoughts and experiences, have a chat, make some new friends and reflect on their past within a safe and social environment, all of which we encourage as a result of our male-focused groups and activities,” he said.
“Our ‘blokes-only’ activities are all simple concepts, but a really positive by-product of the groups is the fact that it brings men together to share a cuppa and chat amongst friends, with the focus on boosting their emotional health and wellbeing and reducing the risk of loneliness and isolation,” he said.
“As a result, we’re seeing new friendships being formed, which in turn also helps to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.”
Regis offers a diverse range of care options including residential aged care, home care, retirement living, day therapy and day respite. Regis is one of the largest providers of aged care in Australia and cares for more than 7,000 residents each year.
