Seniors’ Four-Legged Friend is Paw-fect

on Friday, June 9, 2023

For many people having a pet around the house is a normal part of life – which is why Rollo, the seven-year-old German Spitz – a breed that is renowned for loving being the centre of attention - has proven so popular at a WA not-for-profit aged care home.

The happy hound – who is as sweet as the chocolate he’s named after - has been visiting residents at Mercy Place Edgewater every other Thursday with his owner Raelene Koehler, who admits he loves everyone but does have his preferred residents, who are now known as his favourite ‘aunts and uncles’.

Mercy Place Edgewater Service Manager, Maria Kershaw, said Rollo was a fantastic source of companionship for seniors at the popular northern suburbs home.

“Our residents very much look forward to Raelene and Rollo’s fortnightly visits,” she says.

“His presence is very relaxing for our seniors, they love stroking him and giving him treats, and his visits certainly increase interactivity with residents who are living with dementia.

“What’s more, various studies have shown pet therapy has helped reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in seniors, lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of social isolation and increase confidence and self-esteem, so it’s no surprise that we’ve received great feedback from everyone.  It’s certainly safe to say that our very latest visitor has become a huge hit.”

Owner Raelene adds that the outings are just as much of a treat for Rollo. “He’s a dog who just loves people and who would happily be stroked and cuddled all day,” she says.

“Having him visit really does brighten the day for many of the residents, so it’s no surprise to us that animal interaction is a great source of therapy. Even seniors who have had little experience with dogs can’t resist his appealing looks and nature.”
