94-Year-Old Nancy Finds Joy in Returning to 'Mirridong': The Home she Named Six Decades Ago

on Tuesday, July 4, 2023

Calvary Mirridong, located in Bendigo, once bore the name "Bendigo Blind Home" in its early days. In 1960, a local radio station organized a contest titled "Give it a Name" to rename this cherished establishment. Among the 490 entries received, the winning submission, "Mirridong," meaning a joyful abode, was put forth by Nancy Winzar.

Now at the age of 94, Nancy has come full circle, returning to her "happy home" as a resident just last month. During a recent interview with ABC radio Bendigo, Nancy reminisced about the origins of the name "Mirridong" and her personal journey of relocating to the home.

When questioned if she ever envisioned herself residing there, Nancy responded promptly, her voice filled with certainty.

“Never – I didn’t even think I’d be here at 94 years of age,” she said. “I used to joke in the old days that I suppose I will end up there, but I never thought I would.”
