Calvary Flora McDonald in Cowandilla is delighted to offer weekly music therapy sessions to residents in the homes' dedicated Memory Support Unit. This special program, spanning ten weeks, is organised and conducted by a registered music therapist from Creative Therapy Adelaide. Thanks to a generous contribution from the family of one of the current residents, the program has been partially funded, including the provision of instrument kits.
These engaging sessions provide a valuable opportunity for participating residents to maintain their motor and communication skills through the joy of playing instruments and singing songs. Staff have observed positive outcomes and are pleased to witness the impact of this evidence-based music-making activity program on the residents' well-being.
Ryan Midgley, Calvary General Manager Retirement Communities South Australia – Aged Care, expressed his gratitude for the program's introduction to the home. Its benefits align with Calvary's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for aged care residents.
“Calvary acknowledges the benefits of music therapy for all residents, especially those with dementia, and we are actively pursuing how to continue to embed this into our model of care,” Mr Midgley said.
“While the trial is coming to an end, our lifestyle coordinator at the home has been working with the registered music therapist so they may continue to deliver the program beyond the trial.”
“From my own perspective, it’s a fun way of actively encouraging our residents, their families and staff in meaningful, social engagement,” he added.
