Connecting Hearts and Enriching Lives at Uniting AgeWell

on Tuesday, July 25, 2023

From a young age, Stephanie Lao's heart has resonated with the wisdom and stories of older individuals. Even as a teenager, she felt a profound calling to work in aged care, recognising that it was where her true purpose lay.

After completing her education in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, Stephanie embarked on a journey that blended her passion and ambition. She enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing program while also dedicating herself as a Personal Care Assistant at a local aged care home.

Stephanie's vision was clear and admirable: to provide holistic, person-centred care to the elderly. In her words, "In a hospital setting, you are providing acute care, and once the patient is treated they are discharged. Working in aged care feels very rewarding, you build rapport with residents and can make a positive difference in someone’s day, and this can mean the world to them. I listen to their stories and get to know them. It’s a role that has incredible meaning."

This year, on Monday, August 7, we celebrate Aged Care Employee Day. It's a day to honour exceptional individuals like Stephanie and the 3,900 others who dedicate themselves to improving the lives of the elderly. Their unwavering commitment is a cornerstone of our society, appreciated not just by their organisations but by the lives they touch.

Stephanie's passion for aged care solidified during the initial four years of her career. She seamlessly navigated between nursing roles in residential aged care and part-time work at a General Practitioner's Clinic. However, she found her heart truly belonged in aged care, leading her to pursue it exclusively.

One of the pleasant surprises Stephanie encountered in aged care was the potential for an upward career trajectory. Starting as a registered nurse, she progressed to become an RN supervisor and eventually an Acting Care Manager. Her thirst for growth led her to pursue a Masters in Leadership and Management, which she completed in 2020.

Amidst the challenges of the pandemic, Stephanie joined Uniting AgeWell Strathdon Community and found herself thriving. Not only did she embrace the role of a Senior Care Manager, but she also stepped in as an acting Residential Services Manager, showcasing her adaptability and dedication.

Stephanie's journey at Uniting AgeWell has been a testament to empowerment and growth. She was selected for the Strategic Leaders Course, a challenge she both relishes and appreciates. As she states, "I’m grateful to be working for an organisation that empowers me to be the best version of myself. I am certainly working towards becoming an RSM one day."

Coming from the Philippines and moving to Melbourne at a young age, Stephanie's appreciation for diversity finds resonance within Uniting AgeWell's values. She embraces the organisation's commitment to inclusivity and kindness, affirming that "It doesn’t matter where you are from, but who you are, at Uniting AgeWell. Diversity brings a lot of knowledge to the table."

Outside her professional commitments, Stephanie finds joy in hiking and photography, capturing the beauty of the world through her lens. She also nurtures pet goldfish, a reflection of her compassionate nature extending to all aspects of life.

Stephanie Lao's journey is a testament to the transformative power of following one's calling. Her dedication to aged care, her unwavering commitment to growth, and her embrace of diversity create a tapestry of inspiration for us all. As we celebrate Aged Care Employee Day, let's honour individuals like Stephanie who enrich the lives of our elderly with their compassion and dedication.
