In the heart of Macquarie Park, a vibrant community thrives within the walls of the BaptistCare Cooinda Court aged care home. Among its residents is Elizabeth, a familiar face to many in the BaptistCare community. Elizabeth's journey into this new chapter of her life has been marked by resilience, camaraderie, and inspiring insights. In an exclusive conversation, she shares her experiences, challenges, and the invaluable advice she has for those considering the same path.
With over two decades spent at the neighbouring Willandra Village, Elizabeth's presence has been deeply woven into the fabric of the BaptistCare community. Having served as President and later, Secretary of the residents' committee, she has left an indelible mark on the lives of those around her.
Elizabeth's transition into Cooinda Court came about due to a health scare that brought her family together, concerned for her well-being. "I had been admitted to the hospital with pneumonia," Elizabeth reflects. The incident prompted a heartfelt decision: to move into residential aged care where safety and care would be paramount.
Adjusting to life in residential aged care was an endeavour of courage and patience. Elizabeth recounts her early days at Cooinda Court, admitting, "For a while, I didn't do very much as I was so weak from the pneumonia." The staff's welcoming approach allowed her to navigate this adjustment period at her own pace.
The BaptistCare team's gentle support provided the breathing space she needed. "They respected my choices," Elizabeth smiles. She emphasizes the pivotal role of kindness in her recovery journey. "Andrew the chaplain has been amazing," she says, praising the compassionate care manager, Maria, as well.
Elizabeth's journey to engagement and sociability within the home is emblematic of her resilience. A simple invitation from a fellow resident marked a turning point. "One day, one of the girls invited me down to the dining room for lunch, and I just thought, 'Why not?'" she recalls. That decision led to daily visits to the dining room, a place where familiar faces converged, and new friendships blossomed.
Elizabeth's account underscores the initial adjustment that accompanies moving into residential aged care. However, it's clear that with time, support, and an open heart, a fulfilling and vibrant life can be cultivated.
Life within Cooinda Court is characterised by a delicate balance between personal space and communal engagement. Elizabeth notes the diverse array of activities available to residents. With her passion for reading, she frequents the care home library, indulging in her love for John Grisham novels. Her daily walks around her beloved Willandra retirement village embody both physical wellness and emotional connection to cherished memories.
For those contemplating the move into residential aged care, Elizabeth's advice is profound. "I would say it's definitely worthwhile – take a chance, and give yourself time to settle in," she advises. Her sentiment is echoed by countless residents who have found comfort, dignity, and care within these walls.
Elizabeth emphasises the significance of building connections within the community. "You never think it will be this way for you," she reflects, acknowledging life's unexpected turns. Through her positivity and resilience, she has found joy even in the simplest moments – observing local birdlife from her balcony, a testament to the beauty that can be uncovered in unexpected places.
Elizabeth's journey is a testament to the power of embracing change with an open heart. Her story resonates with those seeking to understand the essence of life within a residential aged care home. As she advises, each day can be a tapestry of joyful moments, woven together by the threads of connection, shared laughter, and the resilient spirit that defines this unique chapter of life.
