St Vincent's Care Mitchelton Celebrates 30 Years with Spectacular Yarn Flower Cascade

on Tuesday, August 8, 2023

St Vincent's Care Mitchelton recently commemorated its 30th anniversary by adorning the Monastery on Church Road with an enchanting display of over 1500 yarn flowers. These beautiful creations were meticulously crafted by aged care residents, dedicated staff, enthusiastic volunteers, and talented local students who eagerly collaborated to bring this unique vision to life.

The craft class facilitated by St Vincent's Care Mitchelton provided a wonderful outlet for residents to unleash their creativity, share their life stories, and foster lasting friendships.

"The flower cascade symbolizes the myriad of stories, experiences, and connections that have flourished within these cherished walls," said Joanne, the Lifestyle Coordinator who initiated the project after being inspired by a post from the UK, where a village had adorned their church with flowers during the COVID pandemic.

"The Monastery has been an integral part of our local community since around 1929, so I wanted to celebrate this milestone in a way that involves our community members," she explained. "I reached out to local craft groups, schools, and other St Vincent facilities, requesting donations of handmade flowers."

Word of the project spread online, and crafters from all corners of Australia contributed flowers to this remarkable installation, which celebrates the profound interconnectedness of communities.

Joanne further shared, "I approached Crochet Australia to feature the project on their Facebook page. I initiated this endeavour in 2022, and by March 2023, we had received an overwhelming response, with over 1500 yarn flowers arriving from all over Australia! Each flower embodies countless stories, which have been intricately woven into the artwork."

Additionally, more than 25 students from Mt Maria College in Mitchelton enthusiastically participated in the college's service and outreach program by visiting the care home. During their visits, they not only assisted in crafting more flowers but also had the opportunity to interview residents, staff, and volunteers, collecting their heartfelt stories for a commemorative booklet.

Caroline Sarra, Assistant Principal Faith and Mission at Mt Maria College, expressed, "Connecting with our community is of utmost importance to us, and this experience gave our students a chance to encounter something truly extraordinary! They had the privilege of connecting with wise, kind, and generous elders who openly shared their stories, filled with love and humour. It's hard to say who benefited more from this experience, the students or the residents, as the warmth of connection and joy radiated from everyone involved."

Art and craft activities have the power to unite people of all abilities and ages, enabling them to express themselves, share their life narratives, and forge meaningful connections with others.

Joanne reflected, "Flowers represent life, beauty, and vibrancy, but they also serve as a reminder of the transient and impermanent nature of existence. The flower cascade encapsulates all these aspects, which form the hidden tapestry of life within these walls."

The heartfelt appreciation goes out to all the residents, staff, volunteers, students, and crafters from near and far who contributed their yarn flowers to the magnificent cascade. Together, they have crafted something truly extraordinary.

Looking ahead, the St Vincent's community eagerly anticipates the unveiling of future crafty projects, sure to continue fostering creativity, connections, and the spirit of togetherness.
