95-Year-Old Navy Veteran Defying Age with Charm and Adventure

Meet Jack Harrison, a lively 95-year-old resident at Twin Parks Aged Care home who seems to have discovered the secret to staying forever young. Born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1928, Jack, or John as he's officially known, might just have a touch of the 'luck of the Irish.'

Growing up in the inner-west suburbs of Melbourne, Jack had an old-school childhood filled with adventures like tracking rabbits and buying a horse with his dad. His memories include chasing a greasy pig during church activities and witnessing a Japanese reconnaissance plane flying over his home during World War II. Talk about a childhood with stories to tell!

One notable memory is Jack watching Australian boxing legend, Lionel Rose, train in a local backyard gym. Inspired, Jack took up boxing himself before embarking on a fulfilling career in the Royal Australian Navy as a Technical Officer. His navy journey allowed him to travel and earned him an Australia Day award for his outstanding service. Jack retired from the navy at the age of 64.

Despite the exciting adventures of his youth, Jack emphasises the importance of family. Recently widowed, Jack finds solace and support from his daughter and granddaughter, who even brought along the promise of a soon-to-arrive great-granddaughter.

Now a full-time resident at Twin Parks Aged Care home, Jack speaks fondly of the community he has found. He appreciates the care and camaraderie among fellow residents and the dedicated staff. According to Jack, even the doctor is nice – high praise indeed!

For Jack, the facilities at Twin Parks, along with the nearby Reservoir parkland, create a comfortable and homely environment. He values the quality of care provided by the personal care assistants (PCAs), describing it as top-notch.

We caught up with Jack on the day of the Twin Parks resident Christmas party, an event he eagerly shares with his family. During lunch, his daughter spoke glowingly about the exercise bike in Jack's room, highlighting his commitment to daily exercise.
