Resthaven ‘a supportive and flexible workplace’ for OT, Charmaine

After many years working as an occupational therapist across community and hospital settings, Charmaine Pfitzner was ready for more stability in her career, prompting her move to Resthaven.

She explains, ‘Since graduating in 2000, I’ve worked in a multitude of fields, including aged care (private and government sector), neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation (community and hospital settings) and visual rehabilitation.’

‘After working for a year in my own private practice, I found I needed the stability of working within a team environment with set hours and days.’

‘I love working in aged care, so decided to apply with Resthaven—and the rest is history!’

Now part of the team at Resthaven Riverland Community Services, Charmaine says it’s the ‘supportive workplace’ that she really appreciates.

‘I highly value the family-friendly culture. I have a four-year-old son, and it’s very important to me that I spend as much time with him as I can before he enters primary school.’

‘The flexibility in my working hours with Resthaven allows me to drop off and pick up my son from preschool and spend time with him throughout the week.’

‘I am very grateful towards Resthaven for allowing this provision in my working week. This is a level of flexibility that I have not experienced in any other work setting.’

As part of her role, Charmaine prioritises intervention with home visits and follow-ups, with the aim for clients to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

She says, ‘My favourite part of my job is assisting clients to remain safe and independent within their home environment.’

‘My average day involves visiting clients in their homes, where I chat with them to understand their situation and establish their wellness goals.’

‘We discuss issues relating to their everyday function, primarily within their home environment.’

‘I then provide recommendations such as for home modifications, equipment prescription or an alternative way in which someone can complete a task. This supports the goal of helping clients to maintain safety and independence within their home environment.’

When asked what she would say to someone if they were thinking of applying to work with Resthaven, Charmaine replied, ‘I feel valued as an integrated team member—we have each other's back, and you know you are well supported.’
