Reimagining Where We Live: Shaping the Future of Aged Care Through Innovative Design

on Thursday, July 25, 2024

The government's Reimagining Where We Live: Aged Care Design Ideas Competition has been a resounding success, inviting architects and designers to envision the future of aged care accommodation. This initiative aimed to test the draft National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines by challenging participants to create aged care homes that are welcoming, safe, accessible, and dementia-friendly, with an emphasis on small-home models.

A Call to Innovate

The competition called for innovative designs that would not only meet but exceed the needs of our ageing population. Architects and designers from across the nation responded with enthusiasm, submitting a range of high-quality proposals that thoughtfully integrated the draft Principles and Guidelines. The strong response underscored the importance and timeliness of this initiative, highlighting a collective commitment to reimagining aged care.

Judging and Lived Experience

An expert jury, with diverse expertise in architecture, design, and aged care, evaluated the entries. Their task was complemented by valuable feedback from six advisers living with dementia, ensuring that the designs were practical and truly resident-focused. This collaborative approach ensured that the shortlisted designs were both innovative and deeply considerate of the lived experiences of aged care residents.

The Importance of Good Design

As our population ages, the need to rethink aged care is more critical than ever. Good design has the power to support older people in living with dignity, respect, and enjoyment. It can transform aged care homes into spaces where residents have privacy and control, a sense of belonging, and strong connections to family, friends, and the community. Well-designed environments can significantly enhance the working conditions for aged care workers, promoting a healthier and more supportive workplace.

Looking Forward

The "Reimagining Where We Live" competition marks a significant step toward reshaping aged care in Australia. The innovative solutions presented by the entrants provide a glimpse into a future where aged care accommodation is not only functional but also uplifting and enriching.
