Over the past 14 years, Rouba has witnessed countless transformations at Multicultural Care, from new offices to a steadily growing workforce. As a Senior Bilingual Support Staff (BSS) team member, she has faced her share of challenges, but her commitment to serving the elderly in her community has never wavered.
“When I first joined Multicultural Care, I wasn’t even looking for work,” Rouba recalls. “My kids were young, and I had just gone through a divorce. A friend who worked here suggested I come and help out. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Helping the elderly felt good, and I thought, ‘Why not stay?’”
And stay she did. More than 14 years later, Rouba not only continues to provide care on the road as a BSS member but also serves as a senior supervisor for her colleagues. “They can call me if they have any issues, concerns, or questions,” she explains.
While the role isn’t for everyone, Rouba believes that for those with empathy and patience, it’s incredibly fulfilling. “What we do is incredible. We’re enhancing the quality of life for our clients in their homes. They look forward to our visits. Sometimes, they’ll even have coffee ready for us. That’s why I love my job—it gives them hope and extends their lives.”
Rouba’s deep connection with her clients goes beyond the usual duties. “Your clients become like family,” she says. “I’ve been with some of them for 10 years. I go above and beyond for them.”
Coming from a Muslim background, Rouba has also found unique ways to connect with her clients. “Two of my clients are Muslim, and during Ramadan, we fast during the day and break the fast at night. I would prepare meals for them and take them over when I broke my fast. Their children lived far away, but these clients were local, so I made sure they had a feast. That connection is special, especially during such an important month.”
Some of Rouba’s clients are in their 90s, and she is determined to give them the best possible life. “I take them out, I sit with them, and listen to the same stories every week. But that makes their day—it really does. Some of my clients even tell me, ‘I love you. You’re like my daughter.’”
It’s the small acts of kindness that make all the difference, and for Rouba, that’s what makes her job so rewarding. “Seeing how much they appreciate the little things—that’s why I love what I do.”
