Esteban is ‘Paying it Forward’ in the Aged Care Sector

on Tuesday, October 29, 2024

In 2017, Esteban Rodriguez, Resthaven Recruitment Business Partner, moved from Colombia to Australia seeking better opportunities. While it was a challenging time for him, Esteban says the experience gave him a new perspective and encouraged him to find ways to support others at every opportunity.

‘I am really proud of what I have done and the things that I have accomplished in my professional career,’ Esteban says. ‘I use all my knowledge, experience and skills to (firstly) find great candidates, but also to offer others the same opportunities, processes and possibilities that I was shown.’

Before arriving in Australia, Esteban worked as a business and operations manager.

‘The role involved interviews and candidate selection,’ Esteban says. ‘I was always passionate about people development and human resources. I felt this was the area I wanted to work in, so I completed further studies in HR management and leadership.’

Getting to meet new people and developing long lasting relationships with peers, hiring managers and candidates, are two of the reasons Esteban enjoys working in recruitment.

‘I’ve been able to create a large community network, and now I can use this to find candidates or to help someone who is looking for a new role,’ Esteban says.

Working in aged care

For Esteban, working in aged care means working with others who are passionate about the sector.

‘I've been with Resthaven for almost two years,’ Esteban says. ‘It’s a pleasure to collaborate with passionate and caring people who share the same values of supporting diversity, inclusion, and offering outstanding care to our residents and clients. It’s quite different to other industries I have worked in. Everyone has a caring personality and is always ready to offer support when needed.’

Esteban says that aged care is a sector everyone should consider.

‘Across the world, there is not an aged care sector like there is here in Australia,’ Esteban says. ‘That is why many of the new migrants coming to Australia do not think to work in this area. To overcome this, I work with different community groups and organisations to share the many benefits that this sector offers, and to highlight the different pathways that you can have and the rewarding career that is working with older people.’

Esteban also volunteers with Resthaven Community Services.

‘I enjoy being part of outings, social events and spending time with clients,’ Esteban says. ‘That part is always rewarding and fulfilling. For anyone considering getting into the sector, I always suggest doing some volunteering beforehand in order to immerse yourself in supporting older people. This will show the prospective employer that you are keen to improve and develop your skills and knowledge. It is your first step to gain access to the sector.’

Esteban continues to volunteer with different community groups and organisations to share the many benefits that working in aged care provides.
