IRT Plans New Life for Diment

on Friday, November 1, 2024

IRT has finalised plans to breathe new life into its original Wollongong seniors’ living complex, which was built more than 50 years ago.

IRT CEO Patrick Reid said IRT’s plans will see the independent living community take on a new look with a significant upgrade and facelift.

The building which was named in honour of one of IRT’s founders, Dr Max Diment, will continue to honour his name, and his vision to provide a safe, secure and convenient housing community that fosters a sense of belonging for older Australians.

“To be known as Diment, the upgrade will see the complete refurbishment of all 104 units, as well as additional open communal spaces, bringing the entire community to life with a vibrant new look,” Mr Reid said.

“We’re extremely proud to honour Dr Diment’s legacy with this new project, providing even more independent living options for older Australians in a safe, secure, and convenient location.

“Our final plans have been submitted to Wollongong City Council for assessment and are the result of much engagement with our existing residents and staff, as well as the broader community.

“We think we have achieved a great result with our design and look forward to the assessment outcome,” Mr Reid said.

The original recognisable tower of the complex will be retained but will undergo a significant facelift to its façade, in keeping with the major upgrade and improvements inside the building. The lower level adjacent buildings will also undergo a similar transformation with accompanying expanded gardens, communal living spaces, and accessible walkways.

Diment will remain home to its existing residents who will enjoy refurbished units when complete, and access to all the proposed communal improvements.

Pending approval, IRT expects works to begin early in the 2025 calendar year.
