Elaine Feels Supported with Auslan and Interpreters at Resthaven

on Wednesday, December 11, 2024

If you have visited Resthaven Marion lately, you may have noticed the posters around the place depicting the Auslan signing alphabet, as well as some basic words and phrases (perhaps you’ve even tried to learn them yourself?). These resources are being used by residents and staff alike to allow them to more effectively communicate with resident, Mrs Elaine Foxwell.

Elaine, 82, who was born deaf, regularly uses Auslan interpreters from Deaf Connect. They visit the site three or four times a week to interpret for Elaine during lifestyle activities and events.

‘I’ve always used interpreters,’ Elaine says, through her interpreter for the day, Breanna. ‘When I first moved into Resthaven, I would have an interpreter every so often, but thanks to my daughter, Cheryl, and (Lifestyle Coordinator) Tamara, I have them organised now for all the activities. I would be lost without them.’

Elaine is pleased that Auslan information is on display at the residential aged care home and says that some of the residents make an effort to learn the sign language.

‘Some say “happy” or “sad”,’ Elaine says. ‘Some also give spelling a try and often we gesture to each other, which is nice. I like them to try. I am the only one here who is deaf and uses an interpreter.’

As a child, Elaine attended an oral school at Woodville. As she grew up, she worked in several jobs, starting as a paid gardener with her mother. After a short stint in Melbourne, Elaine returned to Adelaide to work in the Dianna Ferrari factory, making shoes, for around 14 years. In these roles, Elaine says she used an interpreter to help her at the interview, but generally after that, she managed.

With her husband Kevin, she has three children, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Sadly, Kevin passed away some years ago. Her daughter Cheryl now works in disability.

Elaine’s favourite activity at Resthaven Marion is Bocce, but she also enjoys Bingo and exercises. She is supported in these activities by interpreters from Deaf Connect.

‘I don’t sit down,’ Elaine laughs. ‘I’m always doing something!’
