Nursing for Saul is more than a profession; it's a calling driven by a genuine desire to empower others. "My satisfaction comes from supporting people and collaborating with them to achieve their goals,” says Saul, “opting for healthcare was a deliberate choice as it offers a dynamic work environment, where every day presents new challenges and opportunities to make a positive impact within the community," he explains, highlighting the dynamic and fulfilling nature of his chosen path.
Born in the picturesque mountains of Peru, Saul arrived in Australia in 2018, motivated by a desire to contribute to the community and support his family back home. "Contributing to our community is immensely satisfying," he expresses, emphasising the fulfilment derived from making a positive impact.
Mayflower Brighton's reputation is a testament to its excellence, attracting people through positive word of mouth. "Our credibility is evident as new residents often come based on other people's recommendations,” says Saul. Often after a positive experience at Mayflower during a respite stay, residents choose to stay on, “a significant number of respite admissions convert into permanent care across various levels, distinguishing us from other providers," Saul notes with pride.
Outside the realm of aged care, Saul finds solace and joy in weekend pursuits. "On weekends, I play soccer with friends, or attend car shows and capture moments of vintage vehicles through my lens," he shares, shedding light on his passion for classic cars and the vibrance of automotive exhibitions, “there is nothing like an American muscle car,” and his first car was indeed a classic, at the tender age of 15, “my first car was a Volkswagen Beetle from 1976, and it was my pride and joy as I worked on it to make it better but sadly I sold it before coming to Australia.”
And, within the corridors of Mayflower Brighton, special connections bloom between team members and residents alike. Saul treasures the bond with a special resident who finds joy in exercise classes. “I have a very special resident who enjoys exercise classes with our allied health team, she is very kind and always has a smile for us,” he says. Emphasising the significance of personal connections in providing comprehensive care, Saul believes in creating a rapport to ensure he can provide the best care possible, “having that rapport helps us communicate well and assists us in making sure all her care needs are met,” he shares, “it can also help us identify when someone is not feeling themselves, leading to interventions that could make a big difference.”
Saul believes teamwork really is how to make the dream work. "The collaborative spirit among our team members at Mayflower is what sets us apart,” he says. “Regardless of our roles, each team member is instrumental in delivering quality care to residents.”
Saul has enjoyed working at Mayflower from his very first day, “from the very beginning, I felt a sense of belonging," shares Saul, underscoring the inclusive and supportive culture defining Mayflower Brighton.
When we asked what his favourite quote is, Saul was quick to share: "It's surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth." - David Attenborough
Saul memorised this quote by watching David Attenborough documentaries, as a way to learn English, “He has a fascinating voice,” says Saul – and this practice came with an unexpected result – it spawned his love for the planet and conserving its precious resources and animals. “Watching these documentaries gave me the opportunity to understand the importance of protecting our planet as many species are in danger of extinction,” he adds, “I enjoy visiting zoos as I get the chance to see animals and support their conservation programs.”
