Life Stories Unite Students and Aged Care Residents

St Finbar’s Primary School in Brighton East recently embarked on a meaningful two-month project, bringing together young students and residents from Mayflower Brighton. Working in small groups of two or three, students spent six weeks interviewing residents, gathering life stories, cherished memories and treasured photographs. Inspired by the classic 'This is Your Life' format, each student team thoughtfully crafted personalised biography booklets celebrating the life journeys of their interviewees.

More than simply a writing activity, this project created meaningful bonds across generations. Through insightful conversations, students explored residents’ early memories, family traditions, career highlights, and their experiences adapting to technological advancements over the decades.

These rich conversations allowed students to develop greater appreciation and respect for older generations, gaining valuable wisdom and insights along the way.

The biography project concluded with a heartwarming ceremony, where students proudly presented their completed books to each resident. Each booklet was lovingly created by the students, capturing remarkable personal histories and treasured moments.

The special event brought residents, their families, students, teachers, and families from the school community together, highlighting the relationships nurtured throughout the collaboration.

To express their appreciation, residents gifted each student with a certificate and a notebook and pen, encouraging the young storytellers to continue writing and sharing stories of their own.

The celebration ended on a high note with a delightful afternoon tea, during which students shared excerpts from their biographies aloud. The warmth and laughter shared further deepened the bonds formed throughout the project.

This initiative beautifully highlighted how storytelling can unite generations, offering lasting lessons, nurturing understanding, and building unforgettable connections.
