The Governor of Western Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, officially opened the Royal Australian Air Force Association of WA’s state-of-the-art new aged care centre in Bull Creek earlier this month.
The $30 million new care centre is known as the Alice Ross-King Care Centre, in honour of celebrated World War I nurse, Alice Ross-King.
The official opening was also attended by Maggie Johnson and Beth Simpson, who are granddaughters of Alice Ross-King.
RAAFA WA Chief Executive Officer John Murray said he will be honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, to officially open the care centre, in the presence of both Mrs Johnson and Mrs Simpson, representing the Ross-King family.
“As an organisation, RAAFA is enormously proud to officially open the new Alice Ross-King Care Centre, which represents a truly modern approach to how the aged care industry can respond to the individual care needs of aging people in our community,” he said.
“RAAFA is venturing into exciting new territory with the implementation of a progressive new Resident Directed Care model at the Alice Ross-King Care Centre, which we believe is the first of its kind in WA. Through this care model, we can better respond to the individual needs and choices of each of our residents, rather than taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach traditionally seen in aged care.”
Mr Murray said first residents began moving into the new care centre in early May.
The Alice Ross-King Care Centre offers 102 single bedrooms with private ensuites, in addition to a dementia-specific care wing, reflecting RAAFA’s commitment to supporting the growing number of West Australians living with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss.
The care centre has generated more than 80 jobs for the local community across a variety of areas including nursing, care provision, allied health, administration and hospitality.
The Alice Ross-King Care Centre was designed by architects Silver Thomas Hanley and constructed by BGC, who delivered the project ahead of schedule after an 18-month long construction period.
The Alice Ross-King Care Centre is located on the banks of picturesque Lake Howard within RAAFA’s Air Force Memorial Estate at Bull Creek. The Estate is adjacent to the Bull Creek train station, with a variety of excellent amenities nearby including public transport, shopping centres, cafes, cultural amenities and medical and health facilities.
The stunning care centre is designed to capitalise on natural light within bright open spaces, with easy access to the beautiful environment outside.
