Wesley Mission Queensland Achieves More Success in the Eden Alternative® Journey

on Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Wesley Mission Queensland’s Cooper House and St Marks aged care communities at Wheller Gardens Chermside and Knowles Court at Sinnamon Village in western Brisbane, have each achieved the first group of Eden Alternative® principles. These communities are now well on the way to achieving full Eden Alternative® registration.

The Eden Alternative® contributes to preventing and eliminating the aged care plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom and is based on 10 Principles aimed at making environments in which elderly people are cared for, much more vibrant and interactive and their lives and activities more meaningful.

Eleven out of thirteen Wesley Mission Queensland’s residential aged care communities are now Eden Registered homes and Anam Cara at Bray Park and Parkview at Chermside have achieved full registration in all 10 Eden Alternative® Principles.

“We are continuing our journey to achieve full registration for Coopers House, St Marks and Knowles Court. Achieving this demonstrates that we are committed to enriching the day-to-day lives of our aged care residents” said Annie Gibney, Director of Residential Aged Care, Wesley Mission Queensland.

“Life for residents at Cooper House, St Marks and Knowles Court revolves around choice and empowerment. Whether it’s our residents choosing when to have a meal or how they would like their meal prepared – the choice and control is theirs to make. Our residents feel like they are living at home” said Annie.

“Our aim is to attain full Eden Alternative® registration for all 13 communities because we want to do our best and we want to exceed excellence in providing residential aged care to all our communities across Queensland” said Annie.

“Cooper House, St Marks and Knowles Court have demonstrated that no matter the building style, creating a home is possible through good planning, innovation and engaging with the resident community. Empowering elders and staff and changing the institutional culture of a home is not easy - it’s hard work and challenging, but so very rewarding” said Sally Hopkins, Executive Director for Eden in Oz & NZ Ltd.

“The commitment of Wesley Mission Queensland to seek full registration as exemplar homes of the Eden Alternative® is a wonderful example of strong leadership, dedication and commitment to residents, clients, families and staff” said Sally.

Wesley Mission Queensland will continue on their Eden Alternative® journey and are working towards full registration for all thirteen residential aged care communities.
