Residents and families came together to celebrate mothers of all ages at RSL Care Talbarra, Waterford’s Mother’s Day high tea.
Diversional Therapist Angie Corrigan said the event and gave families the chance to bring generations together in a relaxed environment.
“Mother’s Day is always a very special day for our residents where we celebrate the women who are not only mothers but grandmothers, great-grandmothers and even great-great-grandmothers plus give all an opportunity to reflect and remember their own mothers,” she said.
“Typically it’s a very busy day around the city, with cafes and restaurants being full, and it can be challenging to take someone out for the day who may have mobility, cognitive or sensory impairments as many of our residents do.
“By putting on events such as this one inside the residential aged care site we can invite families in to come together in a relaxed and friendly environment where they are still supported by the care staff, so everyone can enjoy their morning tea.”
One resident, Wendy commented on how much effort was put in to the decoration of the room and the meals themselves.
“Everything looks so beautiful, the staff have gone to a great deal of effort, we have cakes, sandwiches, tea and coffee. It’s as if we were in a beautiful café having a meal,” Wendy said.
While the event celebrated mothers, everyone was welcome to take part in the celebrations.
“All residents are welcome at this event, not just those who have families visiting. We are mindful some people may have families far away and we try to make them feel special on Mother’s Day as well,” Angie said.
“We play a range of games on the day where we encourage people to share stories and memories from their past.”
