Cultural Diversity Adds Spice to Life at Bolton Clarke Cabrini

on Wednesday, July 4, 2018

Residents and staff at Bolton Clarke’s Cabrini Residential Aged Care Community at Westmead, NSW know that variety is the spice of life. To prove it, the community celebrates its diversity with a cultural day each month.

The latest of these was an Indian cultural event on Tuesday 19th June, which coincided with new Residential Manager Abraham Nyanzero’s first day.

Cabrini aims to involve as many residents and staff as possible in the celebrations, linking the events directly to their communities. Residents come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds including Australian, English, Italian, Greek, Macedonian, German, Lebanese, Chinese, Maltese, Polish, Sri Lankan and Mauritian.

Many of Cabrini’s employees are of Indian or Nepalese heritage.

The June event included lively traditional music and dancing, cultural costumes and of course, a delicious lunch of butter chicken, naan bread and Indian ice cream for dessert.

“Our events are in line with the history of our centre. Mother Cabrini (from whom the Residential Aged Care community has taken its name), was the patron saint for refugees and immigrants,” Cabrini Lifestyle Team Leader Amy Kinchington said.

“It’s all about inclusion.

“The event was a roaring success, and all the residents were still abuzz and talking about it the following day.”

The next cultural day will occur during NAIDOC Week (8-15 July), and will feature a didgeridoo performance.
