New COVID-19 Direct Care Training to Deliver Job Ready Recruits for WA Care Sector

on Tuesday, April 14, 2020

A new Skills-Set to help boost the aged and disability care workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic has been unveiled.

The COVID-19 Direct Care Skill Set program will assist the WA care sector with their urgent training needs as organisations significantly scale-up staffing to respond to the pandemic.

Amana Living Training Institute (ALTI) has been at the forefront in responding to the training needs of the care sector, working with key stakeholders to rapidly launch the program.  Thanks to State Government funding, this training package is available immediately via the Amana Living Training Institute to develop the fundamental skills care workers need to be job-ready.

Stephanie Buckland, Chief Executive of Amana Living, said: “The sharp increase in demand for multi-skilled carers within aged and disability care over the coming weeks and months will be unprecedented.

“Organisations need access to a large pool of job-ready staff so they can supplement their existing workforce, respond to the changing acuity of their residents and clients, and continue to deliver safe and high quality care during a busy time.

“This new course will deliver trained care workers quickly, helping to enhance the aged and disability care sectors preparedness for potential COVID-19 and flu outbreaks. It also offers the opportunity to retrain and employment prospects in a high demand sector to people whose job has been impacted by COVID-19 related closures.”

COVID-19 Direct Care Skill Set program comprises three units of competence and will be available for new and existing workers. The three units of competency that make up the skill set are:

  • HLTINF001 - Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
  • HLTWHS005 - Conduct manual tasks safely
  • CHCCCS011 - Meet personal support needs

It will be delivered via a blended training model with students given the option to participate in face to face training via Zoom or attending the training sessions at Amana Living Training venues.  The course will take one week to complete and will be heavily subsidised by the WA Government.

Amana Living Training Institute has implemented extensive infection control and social distancing measures to ensure the safety of students and trainers.
