Social Connections Win Hearts

The Resthaven Northern Community Services ‘Social Connections’ groups need no excuse to celebrate – so when Valentine’s Day came around, they were ready!

Manager, Karen Hammond, says, "Our three Social Connections groups, who meet weekly on Thursdays or Fridays, are run by two experienced Home Support Workers, Lesley and Avril."

"The groups begin with chair-based exercises, followed by an activity, then morning tea."

"The activity changes each week, according to the season, cultural events, or group requests."

"In December, the group made decorations for a home-made Christmas tree."

"Later this month, they will enjoy a visit from the Gawler Fire Service, who will speak with us about fire safety in the home."

"In February, in honour of Valentine’s Day, the group decided to create beautiful, personalised fridge ornaments, using photos of their loved ones."

"The activity brought out everyone’s individual creative style – along with lots of reminiscence and even some shared tears."

"It became clear that something as small as a cherished photo can mean so much."

"Memories made on the day were taken home by clients, to bring a smile every time they opened their fridge."

Resthaven Northern Community Services, at 16 Gillingham Road, Elizabeth, supports older people to live independently in their own homes with in-home care, social groups, and wellness support.

In response to demand for services in the area, a second office recently opened at 5 King Street, Gawler.

Every day, Resthaven shares the lives and wisdom of older people and their carers, being one of only a select few aged care providers in Australia offering the full range of aged care service options.

A not for profit, South Australian aged care community service associated with the Uniting Church, Resthaven’s residential and in-home care and support options are offered throughout metropolitan Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills, Murraylands, Riverland, Barossa, Fleurieu Peninsula and the Limestone Coast.
