Dawn of a New Chapter for Highfields Senior

on Friday, March 18, 2022

Dawn Sparrow has enjoyed a great life while living in Highfields for two decades – so much so that she has never wanted to leave. So, when it came time for Dawn to seek assistance with her care needs, she was delighted to know that she didn’t have to move too far from home.

Dawn and her late husband found a home in the semi-rural community just north of Toowoomba after relocating from Gosford, and following some time spent in Greenmount.

Following her husband’s passing, Dawn moved into the Carinity Brownesholme retirement village, located just a couple of kilometres from her Highfields home.

“After my husband died, I just felt more secure knowing I had the security of someone being there if you needed them. And things like the gardens were done for you,” Dawn said.

“Highfields is a really nice area so it was good that I could live closer to home. If I was in Toowoomba in a retirement home, I don’t know whether I could handle that.”

Dawn lived happily at Carinity Brownesholme for 12 years. When the time came for her to seek fulltime care, she only needed to look next door to Carinity's new The Residences aged care community.

Co-located Carinity retirement and aged care sites are ideal for seniors who want to stay connected to family and friends – and stay living in the neighbourhood they love.

Dawn was one of the first seniors from the Carinity Brownesholme retirement village to transition to the $32-million The Residences aged care home.

“As you get older, I don’t think there’s too many people who like a great deal of change. I live in aged care now but it feels like I am still in the same environment. I still see friends from the retirement village who come down to visit me,” Dawn explains.

“There’s lovely caring staff here and you can have a little joke with them. You just feel as though they’re part of your family, an extended family. They have a chat with you, they make your bed in the morning and tidy up your room. It is like living in a hotel.

“I don’t know if I could pinpoint any one thing that I most enjoy about being here, the whole place is just lovely. It’s absolutely wonderful here and I couldn’t ask for a nicer place to be.”
