Resthaven Makes a Difference for Clients with Parkinson’s Disease

on Monday, April 18, 2022

April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, with the United Nations' World Parkinson's Day recognised on 11 April each year. Resthaven provides ongoing support to clients who live with the disease, and Resthaven Northern Community Services is making impressive strides.

Occupational Therapist, Rosalind Wren, recognised a need for a Parkinson's Group in the area.

"This group focuses on exercises that are Nero-Active, providing the opportunity for clients to engage in a wide range of activities that challenge and maintain balance, coordination, and strength. This is essential to assist with positive management of motor symptoms. The social interaction element is fundamental to maintain a reasonable quality of life."

"The group activities change weekly and have an element of fun as well as challenging some of the limitations in movement that clients may experience. All clients can use the gym equipment, with individualised and tailored exercise programs, taking part in any exercise of their choice."

One participant, 70-year-old Bill, appreciates having a safe space just for him, and others who share the same struggles associated with Parkinson's Disease.

Client, Hilde, comments, "l love coming along and using the exercise bike. I used to ride a real bike back in the day, so it is nice to get back into the swing of things."

While clients enjoyed their time in a recent session, Ros was pleased to learn a personal project of a client's wife, who joined on the day.

"Pauline was telling me how she helps put together 'Hospital Grab Bags' for people with Parkinson's Disease. lt is heart-warming to see the community, especially those from Resthaven's community, become so involved with the cause."

These ‘Hospital Grab Bags’ are currently available free of charge to members of Parkinson's SA National Pharmacies.

Every day, Resthaven shares the lives and wisdom of older people and their carers, opening doors to the full range of aged care service options available, including occupational therapy, podiatry, physiotherapy, social support, group programs and restorative care at Resthaven community wellness centres.
