Kingston Council Mayor Cr Hadi Saab, Deputy Mayor Cr Chris Hill, VIPs, and stakeholders were among the 180 guests hosted by TLC Healthcare’s CEO, Lou Pascuzzi, at a preview event to showcase Australia’s first multi-generational healthcare precinct, TLC Aged Care Whitewater in Mordialloc.
Mr. Pascuzzi says this is a significant strategic milestone for TLC. “Our healthcare model is about providing the community with integrated healthcare services. Nowhere in Australia will you find an aged care home, medical centre, commercial health club, early learning centre, and a commercial café in one location.
“Think about our valued Whitewater aged care residents. As per all TLC homes, no longer will they have to wait weeks to see their general practitioner, as they are on site. Currently, GPs and other health service providers are becoming less able to visit aged care homes because they feel Medicare benefits do not compensate for travel and time away from their practices. The opportunity costs for GPs being absent from their regular medical centre make residential aged care visits untenable.
“The TLC model provides timely availability of professional clinical care to our residents when they need it, rather than when a GP can visit, as well as minimizing the use of locums. And in terms of servicing the local community, our Mordialloc medical centre is well placed to provide this in-demand service, at a time when many media outlets report that the Australian primary care industry is in crisis.
“TLC Early Learning will provide 119 places for children aged six months to six years. It will also deliver an innovative intergenerational program through which the children and aged care residents will enrich each other’s lives. Developed in consultation with The University of Melbourne and Griffith University, the benefits of programs to facilitate social inclusion by creating opportunities for interaction between generations, is well documented.
“As you move through the precinct, TLC Health Clubs offers a state-of-the-art gymnasium, accessible 20 metre, warm water pool, Pilates, yoga, and group fitness classes that can accommodate up to 1,000 members. It also includes a physiotherapy room accommodating rehabilitation services. So, when you view these services holistically, you start to see how powerful and inclusive our model is.
“For example, a parent may drop their child off at the early learning centre, then visit their Mum or Dad in our aged care home. They might then attend an appointment with their GP at our medical centre and then hit the gym for a workout or a swim, followed by a healthy smoothie or lunch at The Village Café. Importantly, they’re not traveling across town to access these exceptional services – they’re all co-located, which is incredibly convenient.
“Not only do we provide a great place to live and services to utilize and experience, but they’re also a great place to work. Our vision for healthcare is to provide a multi-disciplinary platform in one place, with as many relative services available as possible, which we firmly believe delivers abundant consumer choice and a robust care continuum.”
Guests toured the precinct and were impressed with the model of healthcare TLC is introducing, with similar developments in Ivanhoe and Hallam in the pipeline. In his official address, Mayor Cr Hadi Saab welcomed TLC’s innovative healthcare services to the City of Kingston, noting the positive impacts that accessible healthcare and local employment opportunities bring to the community.
TLC operates residential aged care homes, medical and early learning centres, health clubs, registered training facilities and a commercial café across Melbourne and Geelong.
