Bloomin’ Brilliant Green Seniors Lead the Way

One of Mercy Place Cairns (Bethlehem) environmentally savvy seniors has been flexing her green thumbs over recent months to supply the not-for-profit home with a range of fresh veggies for the kitchen. Resident and octogenarian Vera Clair has been planting and tending to the daily needs of a range of vegetables and herbs in a number of new planter boxes, which have been installed as part of a new courtyard upgrade at the popular Cairns aged care home.

Mercy Place Cairns (Bethlehem) General Manager Precinct, Zubair Coovadia, says the aged care provider was always happy to support opportunities for seniors to share their long-held passions and hobbies. “Growing your own vegetables and herbs is a very fulfilling and enriching activity and we are very happy for our seniors to continue their passion for gardening, while being part of our Mercy Health community,” he says.

“We have a lot of seniors with very green thumbs who really enjoy gardening, though Vera is very much leading the way in creating what will be a thriving and sustainable herb and veggie garden that can be enjoyed by all.”
