Over half a dozen residents are involved in the art program, where they have been making collages with texture and also sculpting air-dry clay ceramics inspired by nature.
Mercy Place Lathlain Service Manager, Ven Gireddy, said the residents were enjoying expressing themselves creatively through the program, run by Caroline Eliza Lyttle, the practice owner and principal art therapist at True Nature Art Therapy, which is operated from the Perth Hills.
“Research has found that art therapy is beneficial on many levels to seniors or those living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, not least because it is a way to take time out and enjoy the creative process,” says Mr Gireddy.
“Our residents have really enjoyed these art workshops and the six-weekly sessions have been a great creative outlet for them. It’s been wonderful to see how much everyone has enjoyed working on their art pieces.
“Mercy Health is very much focused on enhancing the quality of life for our residents, and each day we strive to enrich their lives by enabling them to participate in activities which bring meaning and joy.”
