'For Our Elders' - UnitingSA Releases Short Film as NAIDOC Week Draws to a Close

on Friday, July 7, 2023

Earlier this week UnitingSA premiered a moving short film to commemorate this year’s theme for NAIDOC Week - ‘For Our Elders’. The film honours the role of Elders as knowledge holders, teachers, survivors and leaders, and pays homage to their strength and tenacity in paving the way forward.
The film was created by UnitingSA team members Viviana Petyarre, an Aboriginal Family Worker, and Tashara Hague, who is not only UnitingSA’s Senior Aboriginal Practice and Program Practitioner, but Co-Chair of the group’s Reconciliation Action Plan Committee.

The project brought together a variety of voices – including UnitingSA’s very own Aunty Ingrid O’Loughlin, a Ngarrindjeri Elder and Aboriginal Family Worker – to honour the knowledge and wisdom of Elders in the local community and speak to the shared challenge of keeping First Nations culture alive.

UnitingSA’s ‘For Our Elders’ film was screened for the very first time on Wednesday evening at a well-attended community event on Kaurna land in Port Adelaide, where it was also filmed.

This film is an important reminder for us all of the critical role Elders play as custodians of the world’s oldest continuing living culture.

We pay our respects to all Elders.
