A ground-breaking alliance has emerged, bridging the gap between migrant TAFE students and elderly residents of Catholic Homes' Archbishop Goody residence. Inspired by the renowned ABC TV series Old People's Home for Four-Year-Olds, this initiative aims to foster new connections and mutual benefits among its participants.
Under the guidance of TAFE lecturer Peter Thompson, whose own mother resided at Archbishop Goody, adult migrant English students have joined forces with the care home residents, embarking on a journey of shared language, culture, and friendship. The intercultural exchange has proven to be an enriching experience for all involved.
The program offers an exceptional opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in aged care to explore their aspirations in a practical setting.
Peter Thompson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It provided the perfect platform for students to gauge their interest in working within the aged care sector, and they have embraced it wholeheartedly!"
The program's inception owes much to the collaboration between Peter and Archbishop Goody Facility Manager, Noelene Wright, with the valuable assistance of lifestyle coordinator Apii Harbour. Together, they crafted an intergenerational and intercultural curriculum that has enabled the participants to expand their capacities and bolster their confidence.
Noelene highlighted the positive impact of the program, saying “Residents looked forward to activities, viewing it as a fun way of volunteering in the community as their skills were appreciated by the students.”
Over the course of six weeks, the program has encompassed a range of activities, including vibrant drumming sessions, harmonious singing, and "armchair travel" experiences that have transported participants to distant lands. Notably, a favorite aspect of the program has been the exploration of diverse cuisines from around the world, uniting everyone through the universal language of food.
With smiles radiating from both students and residents, the program's resounding success has paved the way for its continuation into 2023. This ongoing commitment promises to forge stronger bonds, foster cultural understanding, and empower individuals from diverse backgrounds.
The partnership between migrant TAFE students and Catholic Homes' aged care residents is undeniably a shining example of the positive transformations that can arise when different generations and cultures come together.
