Intergenerational Magic at Moran Kellyville and Discover My World Early Learning Centre

on Monday, November 27, 2023

The intergenerational program that unites Moran Kellyville and Discover My World Early Learning Centre has become a cherished experience for both elderly residents and the centre’s children. It fosters meaningful connections and shared activities such as gardening, cooking, art, craft, story time, and singing, bridging the generation gap in a heartwarming way.

For some residents at Moran Kellyville, the program has ignited a desire to become regular volunteers at the early learning centre, where they read and create art with the children. Among them, Malcolm stands out as an enthusiastic participant. With four children, 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, Malcolm is well-qualified for the role and thoroughly enjoys the interaction with the children. He says, "It makes me feel like I'm doing something meaningful with my time and takes me back to my teaching days."

Malcolm's connection with the young children became even more profound when one toddler, after a storytelling session, gestured for Malcolm to pick him up—a touching moment that left a lasting impact.

Before retirement, Malcolm's professional journey led him through the world of industrial chemistry, with stints at ICI and Dulux Companies. He and his wife, Jeanette, even relocated their family to Papua New Guinea for some time. Coming from a lineage of teachers, Malcolm later served as a Head Teacher at TAFE until retiring at the age of 72. Jeanette, a music teacher, led music concerts and events, with Malcolm providing technical support. Their commitment extended to supporting Jeanette at Sunday School and the Church Kid's Club, skills that Malcolm now finds invaluable in his intergenerational activities.

Nelly Banag, General Manager of Moran Kellyville, notes, "The joy and fulfillment our residents get out of the intergenerational program is second to none, and it seems it is a very interesting and happy experience for the children too."

Kiana Gohar, Moran Kellyville's Community Engagement & Wellness Manager, frequently brings her son, Luca, to visit the residents. Luca's interactions with the elderly bring happiness to his mother, who considers them an integral part of her life.

Moran Kellyville and Discover My World, located adjacent to each other on Goodison Street, collaborate closely to create this unique intergenerational program. It not only enriches the lives of seniors but also introduces the youngsters to a world of wisdom, love, and shared experiences.
