Unexpected Aged Care Career: Former Butcher Finds Fulfillment at Moran Stockton

on Thursday, December 14, 2023

Former butcher Carolyn Boyce stumbled upon a surprising source of job satisfaction when she ventured into the aged care industry. In 2019, she joined Moran Stockton, previously known as Stockton Wescott, as a member of the Housekeeping/Food Services team. Prior to this transition, Carolyn had spent 25 years as a trade-qualified butcher at Woolworths.

However, after opting for redundancy, she yearned for a role that allowed her to connect with people, ultimately setting her sights on becoming a Cert III Carer. While studying, she also worked in housekeeping and food services, savouring the moments spent with the residents.

Carolyn reflects on her journey, saying, "I am quite outspoken, and I genuinely felt like I was making a positive impact on the lives of the residents I worked with. I discovered my niche in the dementia household, where we always found ways to share laughter and jokes."

For Carolyn, the job satisfaction she experienced was nothing short of a surprise. Aged care was not an industry she had ever contemplated. Still, she knew that she had a talent for connecting with customers during her tenure as a butcher and establishing meaningful relationships with senior members of the community. Using these skills to benefit others felt like a natural and fulfilling choice.

As time went on, Carolyn's abilities were harnessed in the Business Support sector of the facility. More recently, she has been utilizing her extensive experience and knowledge to aid new residents and their families in transitioning to respite and permanent care at Moran Stockton.

One family shared their experience, "In recent times, we had to explore options for placing our father in respite and residential care. We visited several aged care facilities, and we were fortunate to visit your new facility at Stockton, where we had the pleasure of meeting Carolyn. It is a rare find to encounter someone of her calibre regarding friendliness, professionalism, care, and support. Carolyn reached out to us as if she were part of our extended family. We truly appreciated how she made our elderly mother feel comfortable with a decision that is not easily made. The way Carolyn interacted with the residents and other staff during the facility tour left us with a happy and reassuring experience," shared Russell M.

Carolyn credits her successful journey to the substantial investments that Moran has made in the Home. Moran has recently completed refurbishing 18 stunning rooms in the Plover Household and has embarked on a comprehensive upgrade of an additional 16 rooms and staff facilities in the Kingfisher Household. This commitment to quality and care has undoubtedly enhanced Carolyn's ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the residents and their families at Moran Stockton.
