Meet the awe-inspiring residents at Bupa Berwick who started their own choir called the Supas Bupas. It all began when carer Vicki noticed some residents singing during entertainment time in early 2023.
Excited about the idea, Vicki spoke to the residents and put up flyers around the home to see who might be interested. Seven residents initially joined, and now the choir has grown to 11 members. They gather twice a week to choose and practice songs together.
Even Kevin, the oldest choir member at 97, overcame his shyness and performed a solo at a recent concert. He discovered a newfound love for singing, saying, "I never thought I could sing, but apparently I can!"
Singing has proven to be magical, especially for those with dementia. Scientific evidence shows that singing helps older people remember, improves breathing, and reduces anxiety.
Ann, 79, shared how being in the choir changed her life, giving her something to look forward to instead of just sitting in her room. Aileen, a 90-year-old trained soprano, found renewed confidence after not singing for 30 years.
The benefits extend beyond the choir members. Residents who don't perform attend rehearsals to watch, listen, and sing along. The camaraderie and support during rehearsals are heartwarming.
Jean, 96, highlighted the tremendous response from family and other residents at Bupa Berwick. She said, "The thing that surprises me is that other people in the home are also getting so much enjoyment from us singing for them."
The Supas Bupas have celebrated Harmony Day, Easter, and ANZAC Day with performances for their fellow residents. Vicki expressed her pride in seeing the residents find their voices and grow in confidence.
For Kevin, this experience at 97 proved that anything is possible: "I never thought I’d be in a choir, but here I am!" The Supas Bupas have not only created beautiful music but also a sense of joy, pride, and community at Bupa Berwick.
