Paws and Purrs: Bringing Joy to Bupa Enfield Residents Through Feline Therapy

on Monday, February 26, 2024

In the wise words of Sigmund Freud, "Time spent with cats is never wasted." At Bupa Enfield, this sentiment holds true, especially for residents who have bid farewell to their beloved pets. Moving into an aged care home often means letting go of furry companions, a significant change that can leave residents feeling isolated.

Bupa Enfield's lifestyle coordinator, Raj, observed the impact this transition had on some residents. One woman, in particular, withdrew from social interactions after parting with her cat. Raj recalls, "She stopped talking to her family and didn't want to interact with anyone, but we didn't know why until one day, she tearfully revealed it was because she had to give up her cat. She was heartbroken."

Determined to bring joy back into these residents' lives, Raj explored ways to introduce cats into the home. While Bupa Enfield regularly organises dog therapy, arranging feline visits proved more challenging. Undeterred, Raj got creative and decided to take the residents to the cats.

Inspired by the concept of cat cafes in Japan, Raj discovered Sassy's Cat Cafe. This unique venue allowed visitors to enjoy drinks and treats while interacting with resident cats. Ensuring accessibility for all residents, Raj organized a trip for a small group, focusing on those who had previously shared their lives with cats.

The residents were treated to an afternoon of tea, cuddles, and playtime with adorable kitties. Raj recounts, "They absolutely loved it. One resident, Dorothy, found a cat in the cafe who looked just like her cat Misty. She was thrilled."

The visit not only brought immense joy to the residents but also provided an opportunity for socialising. Sharing stories about their past pets, the residents formed a connection over their love for animals.

For Gladys, the trip marked her first bus ride since moving into Bupa Enfield. Overwhelmed with joy, she exclaimed, "This is the best day of my life; can't believe I'm surrounded by all these cute cats."

Myra, another resident, expressed her happiness, saying, "I'm so happy, wish I could take a cat home." Raj considers the visit a huge success, especially for the resident who initially inspired the idea. "It changed everything for her. She found a lot of joy that day and has now started coming along to activities."

The positive impact didn't end there; the residents continued to enjoy more visits to the cat cafe. On International Cat Day in August, they explored the MeowMe cat cafe in Parkside, followed by an afternoon of cat-themed craft activities.

Raj emphasises the importance of showing love and affection to animals, arranging visits from farm animals, miniature ponies, and even therapy dogs. "For people who have grown up with animals, these visits bring good memories and give them a true sense of home. The benefits are immense."

At Bupa Enfield, it's clear that the simple presence of cats can make a profound difference, turning ordinary days into extraordinary ones filled with purrs, smiles, and cherished memories.
