Australia’s leading culturally specific aged care provider, Fronditha Care has officially launched the Fronditha Care Foundation (the Foundation), a not-for-profit charity aimed at enhancing the health and wellbeing of Australia’s rapidly growing culturally diverse ageing population.
Data from the ABS Census 2021 reveals that the proportion of older people from culturally diverse backgrounds is increasing at a faster rate than people from Anglo-Celtic backgrounds.
Despite significant attention and investment in aged care since the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, barriers to accessible, culturally appropriate aged care still exist.
To improve access to culturally appropriate care, the Foundation will fundraise to provide grant opportunities that support health and wellbeing intervention strategies, with a special focus on improving health outcomes for elders from culturally diverse backgrounds.
“Fronditha Care has specialised in providing culturally appropriate care for nearly 50 years. The launch of the Fronditha Care Foundation is an exciting new chapter for us as we continue our mission to advance the health and wellbeing for all older Australians,” said Dr Stella Laletas inaugural Chair of the Fronditha Care Foundation.
Dr Laletas said the Foundation launch has come at an ideal time, as the Australian government and aged care sector rethink traditional models of care. Australia’s diverse community has become even more so, with 30 per cent now born overseas, half with a parent born overseas.
The Foundation is all about addressing this unique opportunity to enhance aged care and tailoring it to specific cultural needs, ensuring Australians can access programs and support that is right for their family members, when they need it.
“Australia’s attitudes towards residential aged care have shifted, with many elders wanting to age in place and accessing respite or ongoing care much later. Fronditha Care is exploring, through the work of its Foundation, innovative programs and services to support elders no matter where they are in their aged care journey.” said Faye Spiteri OAM, Chief Executive Officer of Fronditha Care.
The Foundation will seek meaningful and innovative partnerships to deliver a range of projects, from small scale pilot programs to large initiatives, all aimed at driving positive change within the aged care sector. Current collaborators include Dementia Australia, the Australian and Aged Community Care Providers Association and Aged Care Research and Industry Innovation Australia.
