Benetas Cybersafety Sessions Help Seniors Surf Cyberspace Safely

on Tuesday, November 26, 2024

Benetas is helping retirement living residents increase their confidence to stay safe when online shopping, surfing and communicating.

A group of 14 Bridgewater Lake Retirement Estate residents and members from the broader Roxburgh Park community participated in three 90-minute sessions, run by the Cyber Safety Project, throughout September.

The majority of those participating were over the age of 75 who were keen to increase their knowledge and gain confidence while online.

The sessions were an overwhelming success with the majority describing the course as “very extensive” with all content “important to know”.

By the end of the sessions, participants felt they had increased their knowledge and recognition of known online red flags, how to set strong and secure passwords and how to shop safely online.

Earlier this year, Benetas surveyed more 1,000 Australians aged 65 or older with findings suggesting 80 per cent were concerned about the security of their personal information when using online services.

The 2024 Benetas Digital Inclusion & Cyber Safety Among Australian Seniors Research Study also found 81 per cent believed the internet was important in helping them keep in touch with family and friends.

Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said the sessions proved extremely valuable to the participants who gained skills and confidence to carry out tasks many of us took for granted.

“These online safety sessions, held at Bridgewater Lake, emphasised the fact that it is never too late to start learning,” Ms Hills said.

“It’s important that we continue to offer seniors the opportunity to learn about technology, and how to stay online and connected to the world safely.”

Cyber Safety Project Online Safety Educator Kristy Budden said the sessions ignited conversations that residents may not usually have with their family and friends.

“It was pleasing to hear participants initiated chats with their friends and family between the sessions.” Ms Budden said

Benetas is currently considering offering future sessions to more Victorian seniors who can enjoy the benefits of online connectivity.
