Building ‘One Community’: The Transformative Impact of Intergenerational Programs at Infinite Care

on Wednesday, March 26, 2025

For over three years, Infinite Care’s intergenerational programs have been making a meaningful impact in aged care homes, creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect, grow, and learn together. By bringing together generations, from toddlers to nonagenarians, the Infinite ‘One Community’ programs foster mutual understanding, build relationships, and offer enriching shared experiences for everyone involved.

Research shows that intergenerational activities boost wellbeing, reduce loneliness, and provide older adults with a renewed sense of purpose. At the same time, young participants gain confidence, empathy, and respect for older generations. The programs at Infinite Care’s homes serve as a powerful antidote to the challenges of modern life, breaking down barriers and building bridges within local communities.

With residents, children, teens, families, and staff all participating, these activities create lively, shared spaces filled with learning, social connection, and fun. Whether held in person at Infinite Care homes, in local parks, community venues, or online, the goal is always the same; to build connection, deepen understanding across generations, and build One Community.

Why Intergenerational Programs Matter

Intergenerational programs are more than just feel-good initiatives—they are backed by research and have been proven to make life better for everyone involved.

  • For Older Adults: Research has highlighted that older adults who engage with younger people experience improved mental and physical health. They feel valued, less isolated, and more connected to their communities.
  • For Kids and Teens: Children involved in intergenerational programs show improved social skills, greater empathy, and higher self-esteem. Teens also gain insights into life’s bigger picture, learning resilience and communication skills along the way.
  • For Everyone Else: Families and staff participating in these programs often report feeling more connected and engaged, with the bonus of creating unforgettable shared memories.

One Community at Infinite Care: Key Activities Across Generations

Infin8 Mini Bears

Designed for younger children and their families, the Infin8 Mini Bears program includes:

  • Fortnightly Playgroups: Hosted at many of our homes with structured, themed sessions tailored for small groups of children and residents.
  • Reading Programs: Collaborations with the Department of Education allow preschool children to build confidence by reading to residents, who, in turn, share their own stories.
  • Special Events: Highlights include the Community Teddy Bears’ Picnic and themed days where children share their hobbies, pets, and creative projects with residents.

Measuring Success Through Outcomes

The intergenerational programs are already achieving positive outcomes:

  • For Residents: Increased happiness, mental stimulation, and a sense of purpose.
  • For Children and Teens: Greater confidence, improved communication skills, and respect for older generations.
  • For Families and Staff: Opportunities to engage meaningfully, foster inclusivity, and build lasting memories.

Looking Ahead

As these programs grow, Infinite Care’s focus remains on respect, inclusion, and understanding, continuing to expand opportunities in their aged care homes and collaborate with schools and community groups. The possibilities are limitless.
