Resthaven Marion resident, Mr Harry Berger, is pleased that the AFL season is back in full swing! Harry, who was born in Wales, moved to Australia as a young man and began working as a salesman. ‘One of the first clients I visited asked me which football team I barracked for,’ Harry says. ‘At the time I didn’t support anyone, but my client offered me some sage advice. He said “pick an Australian Rules team to follow so you have something to talk to your clients about.”’
Harry followed his advice and living at Glenelg he decided to support the Glenelg Tigers. In 1990, when the Adelaide Crows was founded, with many of the players coming from Glenelg, Harry supported them too.
‘I remember sitting in the pub with my mate listening to the Crows first game on the radio,’ Harry says.
‘They played Hawthorn, the reigning Premiers, and the Crows won the game!’
Harry also remembers watching the Crows’ first night game at Football Park with his wife Pat.
‘It was amazing, all the lights, wonderful! I enjoyed night games more than the daytime ones.’
These days, Harry loves to watch the Crows on television and is happy to yell advice from the sidelines. He has even named his four-wheeled walker in honour of his favourite player ‘Tex’.
