Martin Luther Homes: Providing Specialist Dementia Care in Eastern Victoria

on Thursday, May 15, 2025

Nestled at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, Martin Luther Homes is renowned for its warm, inclusive community and its commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care. Now, it stands at the forefront of dementia care in Victoria with the introduction of its Specialist Dementia Care Program (SDCP) — a service designed to support older people living with the most severe and complex symptoms of dementia.

Tailored Care for Complex Needs

Martin Luther Homes is proud to be one of only a select few aged care providers across Australia chosen to deliver this federally funded initiative. As part of the SDCP, Martin Luther Homes has established a purpose-built space — Wattle House — designed to offer highly specialised care for individuals whose behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) cannot be safely managed in traditional aged care environments.

The SDCP supports residents experiencing extreme symptoms such as aggression, severe agitation, suicidal ideation, and persistent distress. With just 35 SDCP units commissioned nationwide, the inclusion of Martin Luther Homes as a provider under this five-year contract reflects its reputation for clinical excellence and compassionate care.

A Safe Pathway to Recovery

Wattle House comprises eight private rooms and includes a “bounce back” room to aid residents through a stabilisation period. The ultimate goal of the program is to support residents in regaining stability so they can transition either back into mainstream aged care or to another more appropriate long-term care setting.

To be eligible for the SDCP, individuals must:

  • Have a diagnosis of dementia,
  • Exhibit severe BPSD symptoms that have persisted for at least three months, and
  • Have undergone an Aged Care Assessment.

Referrals to the program are typically coordinated through Dementia Support Australia, with additional information available via the Department of Health.

Holistic Support in a Tranquil Environment

Beyond its specialised programs, Martin Luther Homes offers a rich lifestyle within peaceful, leafy surrounds. Residents enjoy home-style meals made with seasonal produce, vibrant social and recreational activities, and support from allied health professionals including physiotherapists and podiatrists. Bilingual staff, on-site hairdressing, spiritual care, and regular outings further enhance the sense of community and wellbeing.

At Martin Luther Homes, care is more than a service—it is a philosophy rooted in dignity, respect, and understanding. Through the SDCP at Wattle House, the team continues its mission to meet every person’s unique needs with warmth and expertise.
