However, life also threw unexpected challenges his way. Ron faced a series of health setbacks. A car accident led to the discovery of a brain mass that required urgent surgery. Though the procedure was successful, he later suffered seizures and what he described as ‘a slow-motion’ stroke, leaving him in constant pain and struggling with daily activities.
That’s where Care Connect stepped in.
During his hospital stay, Ron found himself overwhelmed by the uncertainty of what lay ahead. “I didn’t know what was what,” he recalls. But Care Connect was there immediately, providing much-needed assistance. A cleaner was arranged—someone who not only helped with household tasks and offered social interaction.
Ron notes how deeply personal and meaningful this relationship became, describing his cleaner as “almost a mate.” He’s heard similar stories from other clients who feel the same about their carers, calling it “a Care Connect thing.” This level of care and connection goes beyond just providing services—it fosters relationships that enrich lives.
His Care Planning Service Coordinator, Lisa, has been another invaluable source of support. With Ron awaiting funding for home care services, Lisa has kept him informed, reassured him about his place in the queue, and that the necessary care is ready for him as soon as his government funding comes through. “She’s gone the extra yard every time, and she doesn’t have to,” he emphasizes.
Despite the pain and physical challenges he faces, Ron has refused to let his health define him. Inspired by a trip to Vietnam before his surgery, where he was captivated by the country’s artistic culture, he rekindled his love for painting. When his daughter expressed sadness that he might not be able to paint again, Ron was determined to prove her wrong. Now, he creates artwork with a unique style—the results of his tremors are often mistaken for intricate details!
He recently exhibited, sharing both his beautiful work and the story behind its creation with his community.
He continues to explore new creative outlets, finding joy and connection in the midst of adversity.
For those considering between home care and institutional care, Ron offers clear advice: “Add up the cost. As someone on a pension, being able to have the services from an organisation like Care Connect makes all the difference. You are not institutionalised in the same way.”
Beyond financial considerations, Ron highlights the importance of personal independence and the quality of life home care allows. The staff at his Retirement Village have played a role in his recovery, keeping an eye on him while still allowing him the freedom to live life on his terms.
Ron’s journey underscores the importance of compassionate, person-centered care. He is deeply grateful for the support he has received. “The name ‘Care Connect’ is relevant because you do care, and you do help us connect to other services. I couldn’t stress that enough.”
For Ron, Care Connect has not just been a service—it has been a bridge to a life where he can continue to create, connect, and find joy. And that, in his words, is truly marvellous.
